Captains Log
Stardate Labor Day 2005
Deer Harbor on Orcas Island
How does the saying go? Better late than never. This might be old news but it seems new, as the event was so long ago.
Augie and Nancy Catalano aboard C's at Sea were our cruise captains for this event. And an event it was. What could be more beautiful than Deer Harbor with clear sunny skies? For most of us it was a crystal cruise with calm seas and sunny skies. For others good ol Deception Pass did its end of summer thing, socking in with soupy fog. On the upside it was a good time to sharpen radar and GPS skills.
Augie and Nancy always have something going on. This weekend was no exception. The famous quiz always gets us thinking. Potato carving is always worth the price of admission.
Quiz winners were the Vettlesons on Enuf, Parrys on Attitude Adjustment and Woods aboard This Is It.
The potato carving contest found a new talent I was unaware of. I actually carved a potato that looked kind of sort of like a Lhasa Apso and everyone else seemed to think so as well. Suzanne Daymond did a bang up job on a lighthouse complete with the light one candlepower to be exact.
The very cool prizes were much appreciated. Gift cards to Boaters World and West Marine. Thanx Augie and Nancy.
Weather was more than permitting for a dinghy cruise around the wasp islands and the usual shuttle trip to East Sound for shopping and lunch always at the Mexican restaurant.
Ceremony
The ritual passing of the duck ceremony with all its make shift pomp and pageantry. Judy Chapman was more than happy to surrender her little friend she has so carefully nurtured for the past year. Teri Fuller is now the keeper of the duck after her religious experience at Poulsbo. That would be a full immersion baptism in Liberty Bay. Word has it the Fullers are now sporting a swim step extension.
Monday morning found this lash up unraveling power cords and lines to head out. Some of us headed for home many headed for more adventures in the San Juans. The week following Labor Day is a wonderful time to cruise in the San Juans. The summer crowds are gone. The weather is spectacular and the water is usually calm.
Groups went to Fishermans Bay on Lopez Island another wandered off to Roche Harbor and while another was making their way back from Desolation Sound and Princess Lousia Inlet.
Our round about way to Roche Harbor took our group exploring. Haven't been to Stuart Island in years. Prevost and Reid Harbors are beautiful and very protected. Both have docks, important for those of us cruising with canine friends.
Our stay in Roche Harbor gave time for exploring the area. A dinghy flotilla to Mitchell Bay, Snug Harbor Marina and Westcott Bay with a quick stop at English Camp took some of us to places we have never been.
The Sculpture Park at Roche Harbor and the quiet scenic roads and paths around the marina make afternoon walks a time to remember.
Every time we come to Roche Harbor changes are in the wind. The new townhouses on the hill behind the resort are near completion. The architecture is complimentary of the period for the rest of the resort. These weekend get aways are for sale. Just in case you had a spare million or so sitting in a shoe box.
