CAPTAINS LOG
Star date -- Memorial Day 2004

Big thanx, hoots, hollers and kudos to Jack and Betty Cummings our cruise captains for the Memorial Day cruise to Elliott Bay Marina.  Jack and Betty are the most gracious hosts attending to our every need.  For most of us just feed us drink us into oblivion and we are easy keepers not a very needy bunch.  Putting up with this motley crew takes the patients and tolerance of wonderful people like Jack and Betty. It was a family affair for the Cummings, the kids came for a visit daughter Kim, husband David and grandaughter Kelsey and friend Abby, Son Mike with wife Cindy.

We were met on the dock, tied up and greeted with great red white and blue windsocks to celebrate the holiday. Who says it's a rough life.  I don't think it gets any better. Friday evening we were treated to wine and finger food on the dock hosted by Jack and Betty.

Smoked turkey and ham were headliners at the Saturday evening pot luck.
Don't know why they call it pot luck, maybe its because we are lucky to  have such a great group of cooks in this cruising club.

It doesn't take much to keep this group happy, as the weather progressed and our red white and blue windsocks flew perpendicular to our antennas for most of Friday Saturday and Sunday, we found happiness in the fact we changed the cruise from Blaine to Elliott Bay Marina.  In the infamous words of our commodore "This is pleasure boating after all".

It's always good to see old friends and make new friends.

Bill Ruddick and Karie Hamilton braved the locks to make their first cruise.  According to Bill, Karie and his daughter Neecee are excellent deckhands.  Bill also got the "cotton ball award".  Seems he had to put cotton balls behind the Foster Grants to keep himself from bleeding to death on Saturday morning.  Who did that to Bill?  Hey pal I think your buddies lead piped you.

In keeping with tradition the party on Sunday night moved to Bill and Karies boat momentarily for a buoyancy test or maybe it was a new member baptism.  A 290 will float with its swim step above water (just barely) with 24 occupants (aka wacked and crazy SRCCNW members) aboard.

Tye Rice and Marlene Wallace surprised the club with a Saturday afternoon visit.  Cruising can be afoot or afloat.

Old Friends

Leigh and Annette Bauer aboard the Horsin Around cruising with Bailey and Sam.  Leigh's Scooby Doo pajamas with martini glasses were the fashion statement of the morning and the evening and any time Leigh wanted to wear them.

Nancy and Augie Catalano aboard the no name boat (if Augie gets off his @$$ the boat could be named C's at Sea).  The warranty is almost up I think this one is a keeper.

Dave and Janice Crotty aboard Taras made the long cruise all the way from their home slip at Elliott Bay to be with the club on K dock.  Crew on the Taras is their talking dog Zoie.

Joe and Liz Ahladis aboard Express O make Elliott Bay home so their trip by dinghy was an easy cruise to K dock where most of the club was berthed.

Mark Daymond aboard ???.  Mark may be in question as to the name of his new boat but we all have had a say in the matter so we'll just call it Noon Day Sun for the time being.  The Mad Dogs and Englishmen who wouldn't go out in the Noon Day Sun haven't made the final decision.   Mark and his brother Craig were seen dinghying from their home slip throughout the weekend.  Monday morning we were graced with wagging tails and happy faces of the Mad dogs contingent of the Englishmen, "Dibley and Mattie".  Suzanne missed a great party while she was off visiting family in England.  FYI   Mark and Suzanne will be hosting the upcoming cruise in Port Ludlow.

Jim (aka the commodore) and Margo Hobbs and crew Chuey (a cockatiel with a larger vocabulary than any one of us after 10 pm on any given evening) aboard the Missey Moo were misplaced on another dock with new members Bob and Linda O'Connor aboard Knot Again.  I guess size does matter.  Linda is known for her impeccable and very effective ability to manage Bobs boating wardrobe.  We all need a Linda.

Joe and Holly Kassuba aboard Sport Ray with baseball great "First Class Nikolass", and cheerleaders Princess Papua and Queen Bee were in and out attending baseball games.

Gary and Karen Sexton aboard Sugarbabie hosted the girls basketball team.  Their 400 must have a lot of head room, just plain room, where did you put all of them?

Dave and Judy Arnold were not aboard Tidal Rush but brought the freeway cruiser to spend Saturday afternoon and evening with us.

Fred and Margot Majewski aboard the Margorita with first mate Jesse donning his red life jacket made their first cruise of the year.  Fred and Margot are acclimating to cold wind, rain and boat action after wintering in Palm Springs in their other boat, the land boat.

The weather was in our favor after all, Patrick and Denise Town aboard After Hours and Mike Nelson aboard Recon were planning a trip into the San Juans over the holiday.  Weather being what it was, kept them at home in Elliott Bay so we had 3 more opinions on how to fix the world in the late nite early morning dock discussions.  Denise by the way makes killer Mojitos, by the pitcher of course.

Steven and Susan Wood aboard This Is It took some well deserved time off building their new home to join us.

Dave and Lynne Parry aboard the Attitude Adjustment are forever happy the club bylaws were changed to limit the rubber duck award to human passengers and crew.  Moochee (PP3)(Parry's pup #3) took the big swim after a bump and go docking by Doc Roc.  You could hear the all too familiar "grab the dog" at slip K94.  Won't repeat what they had to say about my docking technique.

We had a visit from a special friend Bev Rothman.  Bev and her late husband Ron were active members in the club.  Bev now resides in Orlando, Florida, about 2 minutes on the dock she was ready to sell the house and buy a boat big enough to live on.  She had many offers to take her shopping.  We all love to spend someone elses money.  Bev is now convinced she will have another boat but will be cruising the Bahamas instead of Puget Sound.  Trade offs are tough.

Randy Olsen and Pam Hunt also we not aboard Pursuer but surprised us with a Saturday afternoon visit.

We missed Bill and Kathy Bock aboard Soul Mates (aka Blew by U) they called with some lame excuse on Saturday morning something about just got off the plane arriving from Hawaii.  Gee can't figure out why Kathy couldn't get the laundry done, organize the food and Bill couldn't get the boat ready and fueled in 5 minutes and blow up to Elliott Bay.  Truth be known we were at a loss for breakfast on Sunday "where was Bill and the waffles"?

Also missed Jeff and Karen Ashley.  They wanted to come soooo bad.  Evidently, according to Karen, they were compelled to attend a wedding for some shirt tail relation, of Jeffs of course, in some wobegon remote locale in the wilds of northern Idaho where the food may be good, but the sheer quantity of booze and good friends could never be matched to this group.  Pay backs are hell.  We'll be seeing Jeff and Karen at Port Ludlow and there will be stories to tell so pour yourself a drink and pull up a chair.  What is it they say?  Priceless that's it.  It will be priceless.

Hope you enjoyed the new casual format of our Captains log.  Like our Photo Album all members are encouraged to add to, correct or editorialize any of the content.  If I missed some great gossip or a happening during the cruise please make your entry in the CAPTAINS LOG.

Some happenings and gossip were intentionally omitted because they were so great I have to tell you in person, or I am protecting the innocent or above all protecting myself from slander and liable.  Remember this is pleasure boating.

Thanx to everyone for another weekend of memories, great times and great friends.

Your commodore of Vice
