Captains Log
Stardate September 3 - 6
Deer Harbor
Does it get any better than this! Nope!
Cruise Captains Augie and Nancy Catalano with their event coordinator Karen
Ashley made a Labor Day cruise to remember. The event coordinator promised me
there would be sun every day. She had Jeff up early every morning doing a sun
dance. Since Jeff doesn't dance or so he says. Whatever gyrations he did,
worked. We had great weather. Cruise to and from was great no wind, calm seas
and sunshine.
Summer isn't over, don't drag out the foul weather gear yet we still have two
more cruises and Jeff is still dancing!
I was a little puzzled by the theme of this cruise. Surf and Turf. The closest
Nancy Catalano comes to seafood is fish swimming under her boat. She was a
great sport as the aroma of salmon grilling on a cedar plank wafted into her
boat. As the steak started to hit the grill I could see a warm comfortable
smile appearing on her face.
The Surf and Turf Potluck was a buffet of some of the greatest seafood dishes
and flank steaks ever assembled. The food channel has nothing on this club.
There was two other boating clubs at Deer Harbor and the wander bys qualified we
were a cut above when it came to food. In fact the potluck/buffet was such a
success it somehow was repeated on Sunday. We are so good!
Deer Harbor and Orcas Island offer so much to do. As the Island Shuttle was
busy running members around the island, mostly to the village of Eastsound,
others were going on kayak tours while some of us took a group of dinghies to
Jones Island for a walking tour. Some hardy souls were up early and off to the
links bag and baggage in tow. Guess they didn't get enough of the real pasture
pool when the golf guys arrived back at Deer Harbor they had to pull out the
clubs and start golfing again, well sort of. Chipping marshmallows from the
dock to floating rings in the marina is golfing for most of us. It also makes
patients for me. A divot on the course doesn't jolt as hard and whacking into
the dock. I think I heard more "thumps" than the firm clear "poof" of a
marshmallow flying straight through the air headed for its target all of 20 feet
away. From the looks of the water and my rookie attempt, most didn't make it
that far.
BOATING QUIZ & GOLFING AWARDS
Our golf pro in training Bill Bock was the winner, of course!
There was a tie for the worst
Jana Brown, Gilda Ignacio and Gene Hawkins looks like we have more hackers than
pros, what's new?
As for the dancing Jeff Ashley, he now has competition. Bob O'Connor must have
had some ballet in his past. I tell ya, this guy can trip walking backward do a
perfect pirouette, all on the edge of the dock and not fall in. There was
fleeting moment when a devious thought shot through my mind "he might fall in
I'm getting rid of the duck" but care and consideration prevailed. Bob is
pretty quick on his feet; I still have the duck.
FROG FEET? The duck award brings out the best in everyone, first my friends the
Bauers hauled me out of the drink and then my friends the Weigelts couldn't
resist a pair of frog feet while shopping in Eastsound. Gee now I can swim
better the next time I go in. NOT! That duck is looking for a new home. It's
getting very bored with my boat.
I really like my frog feet, thanx Recia and Joe!
New fashion statement for early morning coffee; I will be wearing my pink
elephants in martini glasses shorts with my lime green frog feet. Sunglasses
are optional but recommended.
